About Lorraine Toohey
My work explores the relationships between form, space, rhythm, and material. Through assemblage, I am interested in how individual elements come together to create structures that feel both surprising and inevitable.
My background is in constructed steel sculpture, and I continue to approach clay as a sculptural material. The concerns that have guided my work remain consistent: the arrangement of forms, the passages between elements, and the way sculpture activates the space around it.
Nature, music, and architecture are enduring sources of inspiration for me because they reveal extraordinary systems of organization, rhythm, and structure. They are not subjects in my work, but ways of understanding the possibilities of form.
Ultimately, my work is about the experience of sculpture itself—the relationships between elements, the spaces between them, and the balance between order and discovery.
