Lorraine Toohey is a Canadian sculptor whose practice developed from an early foundation in constructed steel sculpture and has evolved through her current exploration of ceramic assemblage.
Her understanding of sculpture was shaped by studying with Peter Hide and Anthony Caro, whose approaches to constructed form influenced her perception of sculpture as an engagement with scale, space, structure, and the relationship between the object and its surroundings.
Now working primarily in ceramics, Toohey continues to explore these concerns through assembled forms, investigating balance, rhythm, sequence, and the spatial relationships between individual elements.
Based in Mérida, Yucatán, her work reflects an ongoing engagement with the principles of organization found in nature, music, and architecture while remaining rooted in the formal language of sculpture.
